Concrete Industries
One of the most common and widely used construction materials is concrete. Its first widespread use dates back at least to the Roman Empire and Egyptian times. Termed the “Concrete Revolution” the use of concrete in the construction of the Roman Empire was exceptional and concrete freed the empire builders from simply using brick and stone. The early concrete was made of quicklime, volcanic ash and pumice for aggregate.
The next mass use of concrete for construction didn’t take place for 13 centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, when in 1756 calcium hydroxide was substituted for quicklime, and pebbles for pumice.
Portland cement replaced calcium hydroxide in the mid 1800’s and today some 340 million cubic yards of ready-mixed concrete are used in the United States each year.
Industries involved with concrete production and use include Concrete Production, Sand & Gravel, Cement Production, Flyash and the production of a host of specialty additives to provide special properties, including color and texture, for a wide variety of applications.
